Puffy
When you're outside enough through the colder months, the puffy becomes an essential piece of kit.
What is a puffy? It's your warm jacket layer. Either some sort of synthetic insulation or goose down fill.
Can pack down small and the weight to warmth ratio is pretty high. Hoods, pockets and different weights are a few options to think about.
Typically not worn while actively hiking, this piece of gear is thrown on when stopping for a break as you start to cool down. Also in camp when night closes in on you.
A key thing to remember is to not get it wet. The usefulness drops to near zero if the jacket soaks through. Some insulation, down or synthetic are treated with coatings that repel water to help mitigate that, but still not a great idea wear in heavy rain or if you're sweating a lot.
A quality down jacket aka puffy is going to cost some $$$. If taken care of, will provide warmth for years to come. Buy off-season to save money. Outdoor clothing companies trying to move old stock is always a way to snag a deal.
