Hitchhiking

Hiker with a thumb out for a ride

When you start to hike longer distances, hitchhiking is essential. Unless road walking from the mountain pass for miles down to a town for rest and resupply sounds good to you.

How to Hitch?

Stick out your thumb and smile. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

It's almost that simple! Here are a few more tips to more likely be picked up:

Look presentable - Hikers coming off the trail are dirty, smelly and guys can have crazy mountain men vibes. Try to mitigate some of that.
Trust your gut - If the person who pulled over gives you pause, trust it and find another ride.
A "ride bride" makes hitching easier - Female hikers get rides easier.
Have you and your gear ready to hop in - Don't let the ride drive away because you weren't prepared.
Be Prepared to wait or start walking - It could be minutes or literally hours.
Smile and wave - Act happy, because you are...right?!
Be thankful to them - Before, during, after.
